9 Is Not 11

by Arundhati Roy, Outlook, India - The only way to contain (it would be naive to say end) terrorism is to look at the monster in the mirror. We're standing at a fork in the road. One sign says 'Justice', the other 'Civil War'.

I am definitely standing at Side A. Of course Indian state and the Hindu majority aren't perfect. But I don't think analyzing their imperfection as a factor causing the Mumbai massacre is more useful than would be analyzing the injustice of peace treaties after World War I as a factor causing Germans to wage World War II. Once a group of people, be they true or imaginary victims of injustice, have developed an ideology of hate and supremacy and are now killing other people to clear Lebensraum for themselves, I think other people can only defend themselves by force.
