After Feminism: What Are Girls Supposed To Do?

by Amelia Hill, Guardian, UK - Today's teenagers are struggling to cope with the expectations imposed by media images and peer pressure, the reality of low-paid work and a sexist culture.

A very misleading title, but nonetheless a good article making the important point-"Girls' problems are caused by a combination of very modern problems, including the breakdown of the family, and the pressures of rampant consumerism and of educational expectations – the need, in short, to have things, look good and succeed all at the same time. Add to that the spread across society of increasingly cynical, individualistic values and beliefs, and you have a pretty toxic mix."

This problem really has nothing to do with feminism but more with a breakdown of societal values, with economics and school funding, and as admitted by Natasha Walter failing "to predict how powerful, how pervasive and how sly the backlash (to feminism) would be."
