I agree with Dr. Cesar Chelala on the three distinct steps that are required towards solving the problem of poverty, malnutrition and disease in Africa.
As a young woman working in with an international NGO in Kenya, I have come to appreciate the hard work that communities have done towards tackling various issues affecting them. Our belief is that the community resource and health care worker is the best placed person to know what problems his/her community is facing. What remains to be achieved is building the capacity of these resource persons to be able to provide effective and efficient services to their communities. The main challenge we face in Africa is the getting away from dependency syndrome. There is need to come up with sustainable initiatives that can survive long after donors are out of the picture.
