California’s Prison Spending Grows While the State Budget Shrinks
Schools are accountable for student outcomes. Why are prisons not responsible for inmate outcomes?
Instead, government and for-profit prisons have the incentive to keep as many people locked up for as long as possible.
Rehab, drug, and education programs reduced the recidivism rate from 70% to 21% at Donovan prison in California. Using faulty logic and false economy, funding was cut for these programs even through they cost us far less than the $50,000 it cost to incarcerate each inmate each year.
It is immoral to turn over our responsibilty of criminal justice to for-profit corporation prisons.
There are far too many salvageable lives wasted by our broken prison systems and those broken prisons are bankrupting us.
