Reading the comments above, it is clear that both greater transparency and more accountability are required in order to rehabilitate the rehabilitation system. As GEL pointed out the war on drugs has become extremely profitable for those within the prison system. If we are to look at the profiles of most drug abusers and violent offenders, we don’t have to scratch very far beneath the surface in order to find a history of childhood trauma and abuse. So, if we follow this logic, we see that the system is not punishing crime but it is punishing people who have developed maladaptive coping tools in order to survive the abuse. In conclusion we are punishing people for being abused.
