Great article, long overdue. What a novel idea that "we are all accountable for the burden of national debt we pass along to future generations."

The era of "greed is good" ushered in under Ronald Reagan has plunged future generations of taxpayers into a form of indentured servitude.

When Cheney infamously defended continuous tax cuts for the rich, claiming that Ronald Reagan had shown that "deficits don't matter," it was the zenith of an awful moment in American history.

Imagine if Cheney's father and grandfather had held to the same mantra and saddled Cheney's generation with a mountain of debt from nothing but irresponsible spending and tax cuts? Imagine if the preceding two or three generations had treated Cheney's generation by wilfully pledging their good credit and their nation's promise?

But they didn't and, in the process created a nation of inestimable wealth measured only by the pursestrings of its foreign lender/creditors.

When unnecessary surgery, like war, becomes a profit-making venture, society is afflicted with a disease that eventually must be cut out or the patient will die.

My sincere thanks to Nora for this fine article.
