Protection Around My Heart: Living as a Whole Person with Multiple Sclerosis
I was just recently made aware of these comments and I would like to write a little something from my perspective. As a woman who is in a position of needing 24/7 help, I have learned over time what qualities I require in a helper for it to work well for me and feel safe. I delineate these qualities in detail on my initial posting and reiterate it more extensively during the interview and training process. When a helper is not someone who I can trust to be my arms and legs for me –– i.e. listens well, learns quickly, thinks proactively, etc. –– I feel vulnerable and afraid. This then can easily turn into anger and frustration. Of course, when helpers are what I need, then these reactions disappear, and we are free to form wonderful, long-term relationships. This might explain the disparate reactions above.
