Women, refugees at heart of UN report on Arab states
A whole host of challenges, and destabilizing ones at that. But the refugee issue is beyond the pale. Countries like Jordan expect Iraqi refugees to pay for their stay as visitors who have the luxury of choosing where to live and not as refugees who have fled the ever-raging violence in their own country. Rape and sexual violence in war-zone affected Iraq and even beyond are dispicablly underreported in the name of preserving the tribe's honor.
Sad as it is, corruption is insidiously ravaging the society. And it's always the poor who bear the brunt. Water stress is yet another tangible example. While water shortage is merely news for the wealthy as it barely sneaks into their own backyards, the poor experience it first hand. As a result, the poor pay more to get some liters of water, (which in some areas in Nairobi hiked up to KHS100 a jerrycan), while upmarket neighborhoods continue to have water flowing as usual at a far cheaper price.
